What to expect along the route
It's one of those paths that continually changes, without ever becoming repetitive. We start among the olive groves, on a historic mule track that climbs at a constant pace, and right away we understand that it won't just be a bike ride, but something more complete.
As you pedal, the landscape transforms little by little. Chestnut and pine trees accompany the climb, then suddenly the forest opens up and the red rocks, the jaspers, appear, which here have such an intense color that they completely change the atmosphere. It is a strong, almost unexpected contrast, which gives the route a very particular character.
Once you reach the panoramic saddle, the sea enters the scene. It is not immediately the protagonist, but remains there in the background as the track continues to climb towards Mount Treggin. At the top the view really opens up: Gulf of Tigullio, Punta Manara, Portofino, Val Gromolo, all together, without obstacles.
The descent changes pace again. You enter more technical single-track, among downy oaks, Mediterranean scrub and rocky sections where you need to be careful, also because the signs sometimes get confused with the color of the rock. It is the most dynamic part, the one that requires concentration but also gives the most satisfaction.
You then arrive on a dirt track that leads to Case Gromolo, an isolated point, almost suspended, at the sources of the stream. From here the route continues towards the Bocco di Bargone Pass, where the Stagno di Bargone opens up just above the path, a rare environment, different from everything else, with an almost still atmosphere.
The return varies depending on the group. You can choose a smoother route or continue on more technical and panoramic tracks, without ever losing contact with the landscape.
It is an itinerary that brings together many things: effort, technique, nature, geology and the sea. And it is precisely this balance that makes it so complete.
